Telecom Workers Make the Grade with eLearning from Watershed Networks

By Stefania Viscusi

When it comes to teaching employees the skills they need to help a business succeed, there is no better place to teach them than in the work environment itself. For businesses this means taking advantage of technology that delivers learning in a fast and easy way.

In the telecom sector, where the demand is to keep up with the latest trends, it is especially necessary to ensure that employees are educated and updated quickly.

Providing online training and streaming content directly to employees in real-time via the Internet is Watershed Networks, a company that enables telecom network operators to educate, update and inform their employees while they are on the job.

E-learning makes it faster and easier to provide training and Watershed Networks focuses on a learner-centric approach that adjusts to the learners requirements. Using their intuitive environment, learners are able to customize their learning experience whether they learn better by listening to someone speak, viewing graphics, or reading detailed text descriptions.

Because Watershed Networks' e-learning training courses are delivered to the desktop via the Internet, their customers can train employees right while they are in the office and without the need to send them away for training – saving the client up to 70 percent off the cost of an instructor led course with the same content, as well saving on the cost of travel and living expenses or the costs of backfilling those away at training.

"We're creating the virtual classroom where you can customize content and take what you want. Rather than being content-centric, we want to focus on the learners and provide them with the ability to make the learning experience what they want it to be," Walt Mansell CEO of Watershed Networks told TMCnet in an interview.

Watershed Networks also offers a site license that enables a company to have full access to the range of Watershed Networks' courses as well as to the entire Watershed Networks library, which contains over 240 technical modules to build customized courses in less than a minute.

"Our site license creates instantaneous access for a company. They pay for access to all of our courses for a period of time and get unlimited access that enables them to use our library to build courses on whatever subjects they like," said Mansell.

Also, because the content is streamed online, Watershed Networks is able to use comments and suggestions from students and others interacting with the technology to make changes and modifications in near real-time. This means users located anywhere in the world will always have immediate access to updated material.

Taking learning even further, Mansell noted some future releases. "We're working on new capabilities. For instance, we're 2-3 weeks away from adding chat to all of this to create the virtual classroom, where users will see other students actually taking the course and be able to chat with them in real time. Because people learn in a variety of ways, this is yet another way to ensure those who learn from conversations with peers and asking questions can use the chat function to partake in this layer of learning. "
